Aims and Objectives
To identify the needs of individual young people, to deliver quality certified and non-certified programmes to meet those needs, and to celebrate achievement
- To develop appropriate assessment for young people as part of induction, taking account of feedback from external agencies, e.g. school, social and youth workers, education officer, JLO.
- To develop individual action plans for young people
- To provide FETAC, Junior Cert and LCA programmes
- To offer ECDL and FIT (Fast-track to Information Technology), and to work toward the Gaisce awards
- To offer a work experience programme that caters for the individual vocational needs of the young person
- To monitor and evaluate programmes each term
- To celebrate student achievements within the centre, e.g. through formal presentations and Student of the Month / Year awards
- To recognise past student achievements, e.g. through Wall of Fame
To chart students’ progress toward further education / training or work.
- Through the SEN initiative, to help students progress toward their personal, educational and vocational goals and to record that progress.
- To support students in their vocational preparation through the FAS advocacy programme in conjunction with centre programmes and supports.
- To chart transfer and progression of past students.
To promote the value of the programmes offered and to encourage active participation and integration in the local community.
- To inform students of the value of the programmes.
- To inform parents about the programmes, e.g. at coffee mornings and presentation of awards.
- To share resources with agencies in the community, e.g. ABLES (Adultbased Literacy Educational Support), Community Development Project, the Resource Centre, Youth and Social Workers, Health Workers and Gárdaí.
- To offer programmes jointly with local youth and social work agencies, especially in the context of the Summer Scheme.
- To invite guest speakers from the community.
- To source suitable work placements among local employers.
- To liaise with the PR section of the Glen Community Development Project to generate PR coverage for the centre.
To create opportunities for young people to develop self-confidence, selfesteem, respect for self and others, and to provide for their physical, social and emotional needs.
- To foster and maintain positive relationships between staff and students at induction, during the programme and on student exit.
- To encourage in-centre positive behaviour through adherence to code of discipline, personal and social development classes, and 1-1 mentoring.
- To provide each student with an individual action plan and key worker to identify and support their needs.
- To encourage and recognise progress through positive feedback, rewards such as outings, award ceremonies and enjoyable events each session.
- To nurture physical wellbeing through dietary programmes, culinary skills, health, personal hygiene, leisure, recreational activities and daily breakfasts.
To provide a student-centred environment that is supportive, caring, friendly and safe.
- To set up a Students’ Council that meets with staff monthly.
- To carry out one student review per session.
- To provide a safe, purpose-built centre, with adherence to health and safety guidelines.
- To equip the centre with resources and develop skills among staff for modern, contemporary learning.
- To encourage informal staff / pupil interaction through fun and social activities weekly.
- To offer 1-1 counselling to students on a needs basis.
To facilitate cooperation between staff, students, parents and relevant outside agencies in meeting the students’ needs
- To host parent-teacher meetings at the beginning and end of each term.
- To have regular phone and written contact with parents, as well as 1-1 meetings as needed.
- To develop and maintain contact between primary, secondary and vocational schools, JLOs, EWOs, local agencies, community groups and the gárdaí through bi-monthly meetings.
- To hold staff meetings.
- To carry out reviews with all relevant stakeholders, e.g. students, parents, employers, community agencies.
- To engage in 1-1 mentoring and key-working with students.
- To develop group-working skills among students in the course of their assignments.
- To develop a coordinated and integrated centre approach to literacy and numeracy.
